From time to time, I receive emails and comments from listeners asking me if I enjoy other genres of music beyond what I play on the podcast. Some have asked for recommendations. And still others have asked me to get my head out of the past and embrace the future.
I promise, I won't be dumping the podcast for the detractors, but I do enjoy all kinds of music. Those of you on Second Life or readers of our SL blog already know that I do a live, two-hour set of Brazilian Bossa Nova and Electronica at the Bay of Mystical Nights. And I also dig rock bands like LCD Soundsystem, Goldfrapp, Nevada, Fischerspooner and Cat Power among many others.
But a few weeks ago, my wife and I finally had the opportunity (since I so never got the chance to catch it in the theater - darn!) to watch the acclaimed 2007 musical indie film Once. Instantly, I was huge fan. I wont bore you with details about the flick, but I really can't remember the last time I was this chuffed about a film soundtrack.
So you can imagine my excitement last night as Once stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova picked up a much deserved Oscar for Best Original Song. Granted they were up against the cheese whiz that is music from the film Enchanted, but it was nice to see that the Academy can still give it up to simple, well crafted songs that tug at the heart.
Here's Glen and Marketa's performance from last night, followed by a clip from the film. Enjoy...and check back this weekend for another edition of the AC!
