It is with great sadness that the Alternative Classix team learned today of DJ Dave Roberts and Kristine's decision to cancel the Planet Earth retro club night at Neo on Chicago's North side.
As many long time listeners know, the creation of the Alternative Classix podcast was in large part inspired by the music and the scene which played out for almost eight years at Planet Earth Chicago's Thursday night events. Though in recent years we haven't had the opportunity to catch DJ Roberts in action as often as we would have liked, we've kept in touch with Dave and have done our darndest to promote Planet Earth and his other club nights on our show. In fact, we were recently told by him that out of towners check out his gigs thanks to the AC promo.
Dave and Kristine -- we wish you the very best in your future endeavors and look forward to again experiencing the rotation of Planet Earth soon! You can always count on the support of the Alternative Classix team.
The following is the Planet Earth announcement posted by Dave and Kristine this weekend:
DAVE ROBERTS PLANET EARTH NO LONGER AT NEO ON THURSDAYS!
A MESSAGE TO THE PLANET EARTH CHICAGO COMMUNITY
After eight years, Dave Roberts, Kristine, and Planet Earth Chicago have made the decision to part ways with Neo. Effective immediately, Planet Earth Chicago will no longer take place at Neo.
DJ Dave Roberts will not be spinning at Neo on Thursdays or any other night of the week. All of Dave & Kristine's other regularly scheduled events will continue as planned. Dave Roberts will continue to spin Planet Claire at Holiday Club every Friday night.
We want to be clear about the fact that leaving Neo was our decision. After eight years at Neo, we had reached a point where irreconcilable creative differences had developed, and it became clear that remaining at Neo was no longer in the best interests of Planet Earth Chicago or its customers.
We were unhappy at Neo for a number of reasons. And ultimately, it became obvious that Neo's management didn't share our values, or understand the kind of nightclub experience we want to create each and every week. In retrospect, we stayed at Neo longer than we should have. The situation got steadily worse, and eventually reached a point where we just couldn't continue working there.
So ... after several increasingly difficult years, we finally had to say, "enough is enough." Planet Earth has always been our cornerstone event -- our first and oldest club night -- and it deserves an
environment where it can grow and thrive.
We don't want to go into too many more details in writing. It's just too exhausting to hash it all out, and we're ready to leave the past behind us and move into the future.
But as our friends, you all know us, and you know we'll be glad to tell you what's on our minds and answer your questions the next time we see you at Planet Claire, Club Foot, or any of our upcoming events.
We are looking at a number of new opportunities and possibilities for Planet Earth, and are excited about the future. It's too soon to say anything else, but one way or another, we will continue to deliver
the world-famous nightclub experience that is Planet Earth Chicago.
Obviously, when we're ready to announce what we'll be doing next, we'll want to get the word out as quickly as possible. So please make sure you're on our mailing list. Watch the Yahoo Group, keep an eye on our MySpace page, or join our new Facebook Group.
We want to tell you how much we love all of you, the people who have supported Planet Earth, Planet Claire, and all our other events over the years, and helped to make them what they are. Planet Earth has been spinning since 1994, for fourteen years at three different nightclubs, and we couldn't have done it without you.
You are an amazing community of creative, passionate, stylish, and above all loyal friends, and it's wonderful to share our planet with you as we prepare to write the next chapter in the history of Planet
Earth.
Gabba Gabba Hey!
dave & Kristine
